Shrink film manufacturing line

A shrink film manufacturing line is a blown film system optimized to produce films that shrink uniformly when heated, tightly conforming to the product shape. Shrink films are used for bundling beverages, overwrapping boxes, and protecting consumer goods. The film is typically made from LDPE, LLDPE, or blends, with high clarity and low haze to showcase the product. The line requires precise control of orientation – both MD (from haul-off speed) and TD (from BUR) – because the shrink properties depend on the memory of the stretched polymer chains. The extruder is similar to a standard PE line but with a screw that provides good melt homogeneity. The die is often oscillating to average out gauge bands. The cooling system must be efficient and uniform to freeze-in the orientation. The line speed is moderate (80-150 m/min) for thin films (15-40 µm). The film is wound on coreless or standard rolls, often after passing through a slitting station for multiple ribbons. The film's shrink percentage (typically 30-60% in both directions) is tested by immersion in hot water or air.

The key challenge in shrink film production is balancing MD and TD orientation to achieve balanced shrink (similar shrinkage in both directions) or preferential shrink (more in one direction for certain applications). For balanced shrink, the product of draw ratio and BUR is kept around 10-15. The film's optical properties – clarity and gloss – are enhanced by rapid cooling and low haze. The line includes a thickness gauge with AGC to maintain uniformity, as non-uniform thickness causes uneven shrink. The film also requires additives like slip and anti-block for handling. The winder must produce tight, straight rolls without telescoping. Many shrink film lines are integrated with a slitter-rewinder to convert the master roll into smaller rolls for end-users. The line can also produce cross-linked shrink film (by electron beam) for higher strength, but that requires additional equipment.

Key parameters for shrink film: BUR typically 2.5-3.5, draw ratio 5-10, line speed determined by output and thickness. The melt temperature is around 190-210°C. The frost line height is kept low (300-500 mm) to freeze orientation quickly. The film's shrink force and free shrink are measured per ASTM standards. The material is often LDPE with some LLDPE for enhanced strength. Metallocene LLDPE improves toughness and clarity. The machine must have a precise die temperature control to avoid melt fracture. The air ring must provide uniform cooling to prevent uneven orientation. The IBC can be used to increase output but may affect orientation if not properly balanced. The line's edge trim recycling is standard. The maintenance includes regular die cleaning and gauge calibration. The operator must monitor shrink properties regularly and adjust speed and BUR if the shrink deviates.

Market applications and trends: shrink film is widely used for beverage multipacks (6-packs, 24-packs), gift box overwrap, and industrial product protection. The trend is toward thinner films with high performance (shrink force) to reduce material usage. Biodegradable shrink films are emerging but have lower performance. The line can also produce polyolefin shrink film for specialized uses. The investment for a shrink film line is similar to a general packaging line, but the technology for orientation control adds cost. Converters often have dedicated lines for shrink film to maintain consistency. The line's profitability depends on the ability to produce high-clarity film with consistent shrink. With the rise of e-commerce, shrink film demand is growing for protective overwrap.
